Healthy Eating

Healthy eating plays an important role in our overall good health and wellbeing.  For some of our communities, easy access to healthy foods including fruits and vegetables, is a major concern that affects our lifestyle and health.   By increasing easy access the healthy choice becomes the easy choice.

Local Strides, with assistance from the Community Transformation Grant Project, is working on increasing access for healthy foods through enhancements to new or existing farmers’ and mobile markets, farm stands, and community supported agriculture (CSA) programs. The project will also work with local corner/convenience store owners to help promote and offer healthier foods in their stores throughout our communities.

Through this work, our team and partners want to make easy access to healthy foods a reality and help transform our communities into a healthier place to live, work and play

Here is how we are making Healthy Eating the easy choice in Eastern North Carolina:

  • Enhance farmers markets in our region including traditional farmers’ markets, roadside stands, mini-mobile farmers’ markets, tailgate markets, produce carts, CSAs and farms selling produce on farm sites. These enhancements can include the following: increase transportation options to the market, increase land use protections in support of farmers’ markets, structural improvements to the market and implementation of SNAP/EBT at the market.
